Carl F. McDaniel was born April 30, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of John and Henrietta McGinniss McDaniel.

Carl celebrated his 100th birthday recently at WeCare in Montoursville.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the European theatre with the 279th US Station Hospital which was attached to the First Allied Airborne Army, and was in Portsmouth, England on D-Day awaiting the wounded to return from France to provide them medical treatment.  Carl was a graduate of Williamsport HS and the Williamsport Technical Institute (now Penn College), and during his career was toolmaker for Lycoming Motors, Production Manager for Coburn Industries in Muncy, and retired from Anton Waldmann Associates as a carpenter and cabinetmaker.  He was an avid photographer, beer can collector, and ham radio operator (callsign W3HC).  Carl enjoyed frequently travelling to New England on vacation, with his wife of 76 years, Gladys "Bunny" McDaniel, who passed in 2022.

Carl was an avid photographer all his life. The Williamsport Sun Gazette featured an article and video on his time in Berlin during World War II, taking photographs. While in a bombed out home, he found a roll of film which he took home and later developed. He was shocked to discover the photos were taken by a German photographer and even included pictures of Himler, who was the #2 in Germany at the time. Many of his photos are featured on his Flickr site .  In the 1950s Carl was a freelance photographer, taking photos of car accidents and other local events for insurance companies and the Williamsport Sun.  His WWII photos are featured in several books including Berlin Underground, Camp Foxly, Panzerwrecks, Traumascapes, Schattenwalt, and Taking Sides, and in videos Looking for Memories and Stories from the City of Gorzow. In later years he took numerous photos of Pennsylvania covered bridges.

Carl was a member of the American Legion Post 1, the Berlin Veterans Association, the Bald Eagle VHF Society, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, and the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society.

Carl had a daughter, the late Sherry Good of Williamsport, and is survived by grandson Anthony Good and his wife Kristine of Jim Thorpe, grandson Kevin Good of Danville, and great-granddaughter Eliza Good of Troy, NY.

A Graveside service will be held on Friday, May 17th, 2024 at 1:30 pm at Twin Hills Memorial Park, 3332 Lycoming Mall Dr, Montoursville, PA 17756, with full Military honors.
