Dawn DiRocco Gorsline, of Montoursville, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, following a courageous and fiercely fought battle with two rare autoimmune diseases, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) and dermatomyositis.
Born on September 8, 1965, Dawn was the beloved daughter of Kenneth DiRocco and the late Beverly DiRocco.
Dawn attended Montoursville Area High School, where she was an active member of the school community, participating in cheerleading, school musicals, and Key Club. Following high school, Dawn pursued her passion for education, beginning a remarkable teaching career that would span approximately 32 years and touched the lives of countless students.
Teaching was far more than a profession to Dawn; it was an extension of her generous heart. She poured her love, creativity, and compassion into her classroom, creating a place where students felt encouraged, celebrated, and cared for. Her classroom, lovingly decorated with Garfield, reflected the warmth and joy she brought to her work. Among her many cherished traditions were her famous “shmoopies,” small paper flowers awarded to students for their kindness, hard work, and good deeds. These special tokens could be redeemed for a pizza party with a friend, turning simple acts of goodness into lasting memories. It was through thoughtful gestures like these that Dawn left an unforgettable impression on generations of students.
In 1994, Dawn met the love of her life, Brian Gorsline, beginning a beautiful love story filled with devotion, laughter, and companionship. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Brianna Gorsline, into the world. Of all the roles Dawn held throughout her life, none brought her greater joy than being a loving partner to Brian and a devoted mother to Brianna. They were the center of her world, and she made certain they knew just how deeply they were loved, not simply through words, but through the countless ways she showed up for them every single day.
Dawn found joy in gardening, sewing, and giving back to her community. She had a deep compassion for animals and was a proud supporter of Heidi’s Furry Friends Rescue, an organization close to her heart that was founded by one of her former students. She frequently encouraged others to donate and support its mission, reflecting her belief that even the smallest acts of kindness could make a meaningful difference.
Dawn is survived by her loving husband, Brian Gorsline; her cherished daughter, Brianna Gorsline; her father, Kenneth DiRocco; and her four siblings, Kenneth DiRocco, Mark (Kim) DiRocco, Matt (Yvonne DiRocco, and Lisa (David) Bartholomew. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Beverly DiRocco. Dawn loved her family fiercely and took great pride in being a DiRocco.
In accordance with Dawn’s wishes, a small celebration of life will be held with family and friends to honor her memory and the beautiful life she lived.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Scleroderma Foundation in hopes of advancing research, developing new treatments, and one day finding a cure.
In true Dawn fashion, she would also encourage everyone to register to vote and make their voices heard in every election. Dawn took great pride in her country and believed deeply in the importance of civic participation, always encouraging those around her to recognize the power of their own voices.
Dawn’s legacy lives on in the students she inspired, the kindness she shared, the causes she championed, and, above all, the family she loved so fiercely. She will be remembered not only for the life she lived, but for the love she gave so freely to those fortunate enough to know her.
