George O. Way, Sr., 87, of 1720 Wheeland Drive, Williamsport, PA, passed away peacefully after a short illness, on December 9, 2020, at Valley View Nursing Center.

This obituary has been submitted by his wife of 38 years, Marilu Slattery-Way, and is in addition to the obituary submitted to the Sun-Gazette by George's children.

George graduated from Williamsport High School in 1952.

In Williamsport, George's beautiful work as a master plasterer can be seen in places like the Community Arts Center, the Peter Herdick House, the YMCA, the old Eagle United Methodist Church, the Reading Room of the James V. Brown Library, the old City Hall building, the Charis House of Faith Wesleyan Church, and many other places. He also worked with Marguerite Bierman on several restoration projects throughout Williamsport. George was a highly skilled craftsman who never shied away from hard work.

George married Marilu Slattery on June 4, 1983 on the Hiawatha river boat. Their marriage brought together two rather different backgrounds and lifestyles, resulting in a relationship that greatly stretched them both. But in the midst of it all, they enjoyed many happy times, experiences, friends, pets and travel.

After retirement, George and Marilu began spending winters in Florida. One year he organized a golf league for retirees. For several years, he did volunteer work for his Florida church at the Daytona 500 races. George and Marilu shared many special friends in Florida.

Though retired, he served in a major remodeling project at a recreation center in Daytona Beach. George was always eager to utilize his skills as a plasterer to help his family, friends and church with construction and remodeling projects – rarely, if ever, receiving any payment.

George relished a good story – though he often had trouble remembering where a story started or how it was supposed to end. But that never deterred George. One fun story would just lead to another. It was not unusual for George to share one of his fun stories during testimony time at church. He had a beautiful and eager smile and he enjoyed bringing a smile to others. His was a life well-lived. He was a special friend to many people, both in Pennsylvania and Florida, and he will be dearly missed by all of them.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Faith Wesleyan Church, Williamsport, when the pandemic is less of a concern.
