John Joseph Engel Sr., 80, of South Williamsport, passed away unexpectedly, at home on July 11, 2019

He was born in Williamsport on Sept. 4, 1938, a son of Carlyle and Anna M. (Berrigan) Engel.

John had been employed as a milkman for Valley Farms, he worked at Hi-Berg Interiors for 16 years and retired at 57 as the senior tool room manager at P.P.& L. after 15 years.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1958 until 1960 and the reserves until 1964, while in the Army he wrestled in the bantam weight class.

He was a 1957 graduate of South Williamsport High School and on the classes reunion committee and he always looked forward to seeing his fellow classmates every five years. While attending high school he was one of the first state qualifiers in wrestling, placing fourth.

The Mayor of Lowe St., as he was loving known was also known by many names, including Dad, Pappy, Jack, Jackie and Uncle P'nut. P'nut was a fixture on the corner of Lowe and Central where he was known for distributing his locally grown produce.
His house was a gathering stop after every home football game, for a beverage and some deer bologna, it was open house for the Mummers parade for 50 years. He enjoyed trout fishing, and in deer season he did everyone's processing in "P-Nut'S Butcher Shop."
His greatest joy was doting over his grandchildren, attending any event or activity. His grandkids where his pride and joy.

Surviving are a daughter, Christine A. (Gregg) Engel Balawajder; and a son, John J. (Christine) Engel Jr.; grandchildren, Serena M. Engel, Dillon C. Engel, Joesph J. Balawajder and Alysa M. Balawajder; sibling, Carlyle E. Engel Jr. of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; sister,Sister Mary Annette Engel, S.C.C., of Medham, N.J.; twin sister, Jeane L. Ickes, of Nokomis, Fla., and Kathleen Rupert, of Northport. P-Nut was uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle to over 50 neices and nephews. He loved it when they stopped by for a visit. He wanted to hear their stories, but mostly, he wanted to give them his unsolicited advice. "I'm not telling you what to do, but if I were you..."

In addition to his parents, a sister, Joann C. Engel; and brothers, James F. and Joseph A. Engel, all preceded him in death.

The family will receive family and friends at Crouse Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 133 E. Third St., Williamsport, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 5:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 800 W. Central Ave., South Williamsport, 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, with Msgr. Stephen J. McGough officiating, followed by burial in Wildwood Cemetery with full military honors.
