John James "Shorty" Szybist, 95, of Williamsport, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2019 at the UMPC Susquehanna Hospital with his loving wife and children beside him.

Born June 27, 1924, in Williamsport PA, John was the son of the late John and Kathrine (Zielewicz) Szybist.

John graduated from Williamsport Area High School. After high school, John served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. John was then employed by Lundy Construction Co. for 40 years as a carpenter foreman, supervision and contract specialist.

During his retirement, John enjoyed his vegetable garden, which over the years became his passion. John had a very special gift for growing all plants and vegetables. He also enjoyed golfing, traveling, carpentry, and reading.

He was a long-time member of the Newberry Independent Club (Polish Club). He was also a member of the former Holy Rosary Church and later St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

He is survived by his wife Mary Jean (Neyhart) of 66 years; four children, John (Joan Aiello) Szybist, Donna (Mark) Mays, Linda Szybist, and Thomas (Judy) Szybist; four grandchildren Kevin, Jane, Jeffrey, and Brian; a sister Jacqueline Fleisher; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers: Edward and Frank, and seven sisters: Christine Smith, Lenora Lukowsky, Wilhelmina Waldman, Evelyn Hoover, Thelma Bradley, H. Jeannie Caringi, and Virginia Szybist.

The family will receive family and friends from 9 to 10 am in the church's portico on Friday November 8, 2019.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am, at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 702 West Fourth St., Williamsport with the Rev. Brian Van Fossen officiating. Burial at Wildwood Cemetery will follow.
