Joseph Richard "Dick" Wertz, 77, formerly of Montoursville and a resident of Williamsport passed away at the Gatehouse on Oct. 30, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was born in Williamsport on Feb. 3, 1942, the son of the late Joseph L. Wertz and Betty M. Lape Middlesworth.

Dick was a graduate of Williamsport High School. He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Lycoming College and his master's degree from Bloomsburg University. He started teaching social studies and history for the Loyalsock Township School District in 1964 and retired from there in 1995.

He enjoyed traveling and reading.    He was an avid golfer and a sports enthusiast, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Dick and his wife, Kathleen M. Pagana Wertz, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on July 24, 2019. In addition, he is survived by his three children, Richard T. (Barbara) Wertz, of Verona, N.J., Cindy A. (Todd) Wentzler, of Montoursville, and Craig C. (Amy) Wertz, of State College; seven grandchildren, Natalie, Veronica and Henry Wertz, Joe, Kate and Josh Wentzler and Brady Wertz; and a sister, Wendy Rundio, of South Williamsport

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Michele "Missy" K. Wertz, who died July 12, 1987; and a sister, Barbara J. Switzer, who died Oct. 17, 2009.

The family will receive family and friends at Crouse Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 133 E. Third St., Williamsport, on Nov. 8, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 100 Walnut St., Montoursville, on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at 11 a.m.
Burial in Montoursville Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
