Richard J. Girio, 81, formerly of Montoursville and a resident of Williamsport, died at home unexpectedly on Friday, Dec. 8 2023.

He was born in Williamsport on June 23, 1942, a son of George and Andonetta (Scoppa) Girio.

Richard was a 1960 graduate of Williamsport High School, after high school he attended Lycoming College and he then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from Jan. of 1962 until Jan. of 1965 and in the reserves until Jan. of 1968, serving with Company A 17th Signal Battalion.  While serving in Germany he coached a Karlsruh Little League Team mainly consisting of enlisted family members, children in which he was quite proud.

He was employed by the U.S. Post Office and served as the Post Master of various offices including Penns Creek, Millmont, Linden, Muncy and at retirement the Trout Run office.  Upon retiring, Richard successfully sold real estate with the Girio Agency and enjoyed meeting clients and assisting them with their real estate needs.  Richard enjoyed fishing, working around the house and visits from his grand kids, he was well known in the area for his dancing ability and won many area contests. Richard also played basketball in the Williamsport city league in the 1970's.  He will be remembered for his sense of humor and never-ending smile.

Richard was a 40-year member of the Williamsport Lions Club and served as Past President and many elected positions including Lion Tail Tamer and Lion Twister.  Richard was instrumental in bringing in over twenty members in to the club.  He is a Lion PA Fellow and a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor bestowed upon a Lion for humanitarian service.  In addition, he was a member of VFW, Post 7863 Leroy O Buck, Duboistown, and American Legion Post 1, Williamsport.

Surviving are his son, David Matthew Girio and wife, Natedao, of Waynesboro, PA; his daughter, Suzanne, and husband Eric Judge of North Abington Twp. PA; two grandsons, Nathan Girio and Walker Judge, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings; Arthur, Joseph, Carlo, Eva Pellegrino and Philip.

The family will receive family and friends at the Crouse Funeral Home, 133 E. Third St., Williamsport PA 17701 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am on Saturday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 800 Mulberry St., Montoursville, PA 17754 at 10 am on Saturday, December 16, 2023 with the Rev. Michael S. McCormick officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Montoursville, PA.
